I’m all the way in the Caribbean (Trinidad) and I use any of the techniques I have access to. Last academic year (2018-2019) I received 30 students into my Standard 3 class (grade 4). Five of them were at kindergarten reading level while two didn’t even know phonics. I didn’t complain because we’re a small school and I didn’t want to cause any negativity among staff. I did a lot of research and found Reading Simplified. After using what I found on Reading Simplified, by the end of the academic year the five students were reading independently at the grade 4 level sadly however the two students who couldn’t read only made it as far as grade 2. One of them is repeating grade 4. The other was too old so he is moving on to grade 5. The positive is that I moved up with the class so now I can continue working with him.
Avianne, what a great story you tell! It’s so exciting to me to have you testing out these activities in Trinidad! And moving those kiddos from K to 2nd grade reading level in your first year of learning Reading Simplified is still SUPER! It IS excellent that you get to move up with this group and continue the good that you’ve started. Now that you know more about the Reading Simplified system, I bet your year will start out with a bang.
