Researchers have repeatedly discovered that elementary teachers have poor knowledge of phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge (e.g., Moats, 1994 or Cunningham et al., 2009). 🙁
And…teachers with stronger knowledge in these domains get stronger outcomes in their students' reading (e.g., McCutchen et al., 2002a or McCutchen et al., 2002b).
The good news is that it's easy to learn–most of us just haven't been taught it before.
