She talks about making sure the “sound & symbol” concept us understood by the student … that is … making sure they realize the sound made by each letter (symbol). I guess this is where some students have some degree of breakdown and, therefore, difficulty sounding out words properly. This “game” would work very easily with the cookie sheets and the magnetic letters that I have.

If you use magnetic letters, consider taping consonant digraphs together (i.e., “sh” and “ck “) so students perceive that each unit is 1 sound
